Our Faculty

Devoted to their craft, and to every student.

Every Beyond Young teacher is chosen for two things: deep expertise in their subject, and a genuine talent for helping young students fall in love with it.

Reading & Writing

Mrs. O'Neil

Pre-K – Grade 8 · Five years as a school principal

Mrs. O'Neil builds her lessons around texts kids actually want to read, then works through drafts with real feedback — steering toward a clearer sentence, not a red pen. The pace is patient and structured, the kind you'd expect from someone who has run a whole school, not just a classroom. Competition prep is there for anyone who wants to go further.

Reading & Writing

Mr. Alkhabbaz

Grade 6 – Grade 12 · A published Princeton writer

Mr. Alkhabbaz works with students one-on-one, walking through their own drafts line by line until an argument actually holds together. He teaches the same close-reading habits that shaped his own writing — how to build a paragraph that earns its point, not just states it. Most sessions end with a page that's genuinely stronger than where it started.

Public Speaking

Mr. Schwartzberg

Grade 3 – Grade 11 · He coaches CEOs. Now your kids.

Plenty of kids can write a great paragraph but freeze the moment they have to stand and say it out loud. Mr. Schwartzberg's classes work through activity and practice, not lecture — think on your feet, take real feedback, try it again. Kids leave standing taller, and most are having more fun than they expected.

Math

Mr. Yilmaz

Grade 2 – Grade 12 · 17 years teaching math, every level

In Mr. Yilmaz's classroom, a student still shaky on fractions and one deep into AP Calculus both get material pitched exactly where they are — one teacher covering the full span from Pre-Algebra to AP Statistics, so families don't have to switch tutors as their child moves up. Students who want more can join his Math Olympiad group.

Math & Entrepreneurship

Ms. Sansone

Kindergarten – Grade 6 · Singapore Math, plus real business skills

In Ms. Sansone's Singapore Math class, kids work through the reasoning behind an answer, not just the steps to get there, so they leave with real number sense instead of memorized tricks. Entrepreneurship days flip the format entirely — kids pitch, price, and sell something real, a different kind of math practice, and a preview of how the world outside school works.

Fine Arts

Zheyi Zhang

Pre-K – Grade 10 · He taught at Peking University. Now yours.

In Mr. Zhang's studio, students work the way a professional artist does — real materials, real technique, and room to develop their own voice rather than copy a template. His own training blends classical Eastern craft with contemporary international practice, and he brings that same balance into class: creativity and expression, but grounded in real skill.

Sculpture

Mr. Song

Pre-K – Grade 7 · His work is museum-collected. Now yours.

In Mr. Song's sculpture class, kids move past drawing and painting into real three-dimensional building — cutting, bending, and joining actual materials the way a working sculptor does. He trained at CAFA under Sui Jianguo, one of the pioneers of Chinese contemporary sculpture, and his own large-scale work now sits in museum collections in Sydney and Beijing. That same hands-on rigor comes straight into the classroom.

SAT English Tutor

Ms. Gitter

Grade 9 – Grade 12 · Proven record: SAT scores up 20%

Before coming to BY, Ms. Gitter taught English virtually to young learners in China, so she's used to meeting kids wherever they are with a second language at home — patient, step by step, no assumptions. Her sessions stay small on purpose, so she can pace each student differently instead of teaching to one fixed schedule, and nobody feels rushed toward test day.

AP Science & Math

Mr. Sherman

Grade 6 – Grade 12 & College · Twice the national AP pass rate

Mr. Sherman tutors one-on-one, so the hour is built entirely around what a specific student is stuck on — physics one week, statistics the next, whatever the transcript needs. He works with middle schoolers through college students, which means he's used to explaining the same concept three different ways until it lands.
